egarding former Under Secretary of Defense Dov Zakheim’s reflections on the Trump election (“Second Thoughts,” Dec. 2), stating that “his [Trump’s] success is our success” suffers from shortsighted recklessness. Failure to take inflammatory campaign statements seriously is akin to having one’s head in the sand. Donald Trump is serious about the hate that spews from his mouth.
The proof is his appointment of Stephen Bannon, with a history of
xenophobia and misogyny and a penchant for misinformation, as chief
strategist and senior counselor to the president.
Democracy dies when we blindly follow authority. It thrives when citizens stand for their beliefs.
