The Tragedy Of Guns

Your excellent editorial, “Target: Gun Control” (Oct. 6), ends on a sad note, observing that no real action to curb weaponry will occur unless the next massacre takes the lives of some gun advocates. We do not wish this fate upon them. But it may be the unvarnished truth.

America’s impossible gun situation is due to several items embedded in our political and social system. Congress is beholden to the National Rifle Association (NRA), which provides funding for candidates who agree to cast votes favorable to gun lobbyists. Millions of people have been convinced that gun ownership will make them safe. Somehow gun sales skyrocket after a gun incident. Is anyone safer?

As slavery was the shame of America the Beautiful, so is the daily toll of guns — often innocent children, often accidental deaths — all these the shame upon America in the 21st century.
