Although I usually find myself agreeing with Gary Rosenblatt, his column in the June 28 issue on the Baltimore Orioles (“For An Oriole Fan, It’s The ‘Oys Of Summer’”) cannot stand! You have insulted the memory and history of the New York Mets and that cannot be allowed.
Rosenblatt writes: “They [the Orioles] finished last season [2018] with the worst won-loss record in baseball since World War II.” This is patently and provably false.
The 1962 Mets have the worst won-loss record of all time, dating back to the beginnings of baseball. As Rosenblatt says, the 2018 Orioles finished 47-115 with a .290 winning percentage, almost three out of every 10 games.
The 1962 New York Mets finished with a .250 average.They won seven fewer games than the 2018 Orioles and lost five more games.
It is true that the Orioles finished 61 games off the pace and the Mets finished a much closer 60 1/2 games out. If those two games were played, the Mets would have finished even farther out than your beloved Orioles.
I would appreciate it if Rosenblatt would retract that canard about the Orioles being worse than the 1962 Mets. We have a reputation to uphold!
