Europeans seek role in peace process

BRUSSELS, Oct. 27 (JTA) — The European Union is making a new attempt to intervene in the faltering Middle East peace process. The 15 E.U. foreign ministers, meeting Sunday in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg, decided to send a delegation to the Middle East to support American efforts to break the deadlock in the peace talks. The E.U. has often voiced its desire to be more involved in the process and has repeatedly sent emissaries to the region. Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jacques Poos will lead the delegation, which is expected to visit the region early next month. Luxembourg currently holds the E.U. presidency. “We agreed to reinforce our cooperation with the United States with the aim of putting a just and durable solution to the conflict,” said Poos at a news conference after Sunday’s meeting. After his trip, Poos is expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in Washington in an effort to coordinate E.U. Middle East policy with U.S. policy.
