The
Bush administration called on Syria to hold open elections.
“The
upcoming parliamentary elections set to take place in Syria on April 22, 2007,
are a historic opportunity for President Assad to enact the reforms he promised
when he came to power,” the State Department said in a statement Thursday.
“The United States is deeply concerned that the
Syrian regime will again fail its people by not holding free and fair elections,”
it said. “We hope every Syrian’s voice can be heard without intimidation –
and we hope President Assad will listen.”
