Canada bars Black Panther leader

Jewish leaders in Canada expressed approval after the government barred the leader of the U.S.-based New Black Panther Party from entering the country. Malik Zulu Shabazz, who was invited by Black Youth Taking Action to address a rally in Toronto, was refused entry Tuesday. Bernie Farber, CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress, expressed satisfaction, citing a foreword Shabazz wrote for the 2005 book “Synagogue of Satan” in which he claimed that “the Jewish elite” are the masters of satanic forces that corrupt the world. Farber said Shabazz “is the worst possible kind of speaker that one can have to speak to youth or anybody else.” B’nai Brith Canada, which had urged the government to keep out Shabazz, applauded the government for its “resolve and determination to fight hatred and extremism.” “This is a case of an individual who has a well-known and documented history of advocating violence and promoting hatred,” said B’nai Brith’s executive vice president, Frank Dimant.
