Iran was reported to have violated a second U.N. Security Council resolution designed to curb its nuclear program.
The U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency said in a report issued Wednesday that Iran has expanded its uranium enrichment, which can be used to make atomic bombs, defying a Security Council resolution of March 24. Iran is already under limited sanctions, including from a previous resolution, and the latest IAEA report could expose it to tougher measures.
U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said Washington would consult with its Security Council partners on the next step. “Iran’s leaders are only furthering the isolation of the Iranian people,” he said.
Israeli officials voiced concern over Iran’s potential progress toward nuclear weaponry, saying more aggressive international diplomacy is required.
