The newly elected president of the European Jewish Congress called on Venezuela’s president to address escalating anti-Semitism in his country.Moshe Kantor issued his call during Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s current visit to Russia, saying Venezuela should make every effort to ensure the free and safe functioning of the local Jewish community.Kantor was elected president of the EJC last week in a hard-fought campaign against incumbent President Pierre Besnainou, who among other things criticized Kantor for being too close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
