The United Jewish Communities distributed replica dog tags of three captive Israeli soldiers to every member of the U.S. Congress. The dog tags, bearing the names of Cpl. Gilad Shalit, captured by Gaza Strip-based Hamas-affiliated gunmen on June 25 2006, and Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, captured two weeks later in the Hezbollah cross border raid that started last summer’s Lebanon war, were distributed to every office in the House of Representatives and Senate on the anniversary of Shalit’s capture. UJC’s Free the Soldiers campaign may be found at http://freethesoldiers.ujcweb.org/. United Jewish Communities is the umbrella body for federations.
