U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the rocket attack on northern Israel. In a statement Monday, Ban said he “strongly deplores” the attack, which he described as “an attempt to destabilize the situation in Lebanon.” Ban reiterated the need to abide by U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for respect of the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon. He urged restraint by all parties.Ban’s statement was echoed by the Security Council. Belgain Ambassador Johan Verbeke, the council president, called the attack “a flagrant violation” of the resolution ending last summer’s conflict in Lebanon.
