Israel’s foreign minister is in China to lobby for tougher international sanctions against Iran.

Tzipi Livni during a three-day visit to Beijing that began Sunday will meet with senior government officials and “discuss China’s reservations concerning the escalation of sanctions against Iran,” her office said.

China, like Russia, has voiced preference for curbing Iran’s nuclear program through negotiations. As veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council, they could block further sanctions against Iran.

Livni’s office said that while in China, which established ties with Israel 15 years ago, she also would address bilateral trade, cultural and tourism initiatives.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visited Beijing in January.
