An Israeli photographer’s portrait of a Rwandan rape victim won a top international prize.
Jonathan Torgovnik won Britain’s National Portrait Gallery’s annual photography prize Tuesday for his image of a Tutsi woman embracing her daughter, conceived after she was raped by Hutus during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
Torgovnik, 38, was awarded $25,000 in prize money. Now based in New York, the photographer has set up Foundation Rwanda, a charity to support the education of children born as a result of rape in the war-torn African country.
