The Bush administration’s new security envoy is making his first official visit to Israel.
James Jones, whose appointment as Israeli-Palestinian security troubleshooter was announced at last month’s Annapolis peace conference, was to visit Israel Tuesday for talks with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, U.S. officials said.
Jones, a retired Marine general, met Palestinian Authority leaders at Monday’s donor conference in Paris.
Jones is charged with advising the administration of P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas on how to foster security in the West Bank. The U.S. envoy also will be in close contact with Egypt and Israel on containing the terrorist threat emanating from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
