Five Israeli scientists won European Union research grants.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem announced this week that five of its researchers were among 200 international winners of five-year grants given out by the E.U.’s European Research Council.

There were some 9,000 applicants for the grants, which are worth about $1.5 million each and were issued this year for the first time. Israel ranks seventh in the number of total grant winners by country.

The Hebrew University winners include two medical researchers, a chemist, a physicist and a mathematician.
