The longest university strike in Israeli history has ended.
Professors and Education Ministry officials signed an agreement late Thursday, ending the 88-day strike. Students were told to return to class on Sunday. University presidents had announced earlier this week that they would shut down the universities if the strike dragged on.
The deal that ended the strike was reached after disagreements over the lecturers’ pension funds were resolved.
The head of the lecturers’ union, Prof. Tzvi HaCohen, said after the deal was signed, “The agreement which we reached is unprecedented, and we are positive that it will significantly reduce the brain drain,” according to the Jerusalem Post. “This is a good day for the higher education and for the State of Israel.”
