Anti-gay lawmaker threatened

An Israeli lawmaker said he has been receiving death threats since blaming homosexuals for earthquakes.

Shlomo Benizri of the religious party Shas told reporters Sunday that he was warned by the Knesset’s security service that someone using the moniker “Satan” has been sending him death threats.

The threats appeared to be linked to a package of white powder delivered to Benizri’s office last week. An aide to the Orthodox lawmaker complained of feeling unwell after he opened the package but police, having cleared the entire floor in an anthrax scare, said investigations found the powder to be harmless.

Benizri raised left-wing hackles last month by arguing in a plenum debate that a series of earthquakes that recently hit Israel were the result of the Jewish state’s laws permitting sodomy.
