John McCain secured the Republican nomination and Hillary Clinton ended her 11-state losing streak with primary wins Tuesday night.

McCain, the Republican senator from Arizona, scored significant victories in the GOP primaries in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island. The wins prompted his main remaining rival, Mike Huckabee, to drop out of the race.

President Bush is expected to endorse McCain on Wednesday at the White House.

Clinton scored big wins in Ohio and Rhode Island, and a tight victory in texas. She was soundly defeated in Vermont. The New York senator and Barack Obama were running neck-and-neck late into the night Tuesday. Obama’s camp was predicting that once all the votes were tallied, he would still command a 150-delegate lead in the Democratic primary race.
