The United Nations sent an official to assess Palestinian claims against Israel’s West Bank security fence.
Vladimir Goryayev, executive director of the United Nations Register of Damage (UNRoD), is making his first visit to the West Bank this week to hear from Palestinians who say the fence deprives them of access to their lands or to vital services.
Israel has said it will not cooperate with Goryayev, whose organization was created following the World Court’s designation of the fence as illegal. Jerusalem rejected that ruling as biased and indifferent to Israel’s need to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers.
“This body is yet another body which is the result of the automatic majority in the General Assembly” against Israel, a Foreign Ministry official told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
“At the end of the day, this mandate is not helpful to Palestinians, as others are not, especially when the Israeli legal establishment does give remedy to Palestinians who claim they have been damaged by the security fence.”
