Israel, at 60, is unflagging in its quest for peace with its neighbors, Ehud Olmert said.

“As we approach Independence Day, we are faced with political, social and security problems, but we will continue to march on without hysteria, with careful consideration and with the confidence to make Israel stronger,” the Israeli prime minister said in a speech Monday.

“We will continue to bear the burden of improving the security and welfare of Israel, and we will continue our efforts to reach a peace deal with every Arab country,” he said.

The speech, before a State of Israel Bonds group at the Knesset, was expected to be Olmert’s last before Memorial Day, which begins Tuesday night, and is followed immediately by Israel’s 60th Independence Day.

Olmert made no mention of the recent police investigation opened against him that has prompted many Israeli pundits to predict his resignation.
