Property belonging to a Jewish family in western Maine was vandalized in an apparent hate crime.

A swastika, the phrase “white power” and “KKK” were painted Aug. 2 over equipment on the Round Pond Maine housing development in Rangeley owned by the Glick family, according to the Maine Morning Sentinel.

“In my opinion, it is definitely someone who has an issue with this development and who knows the family is Jewish,” Rangeley Police Chief Phil Weymouth told the Morning Sentinel. “I think it’s a disgrace. Right now, we’re taking this very seriously because this is not something we want in our community.”

Weymouth said hate crimes are very rare in Rangeley, a resort town with a population of approximately 1,500. The Glicks came to Maine from New York.
