President Bush met with former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky and other activists in New York.
The meeting, which included the president’s wife, Laura, took place Tuesday on Governor’s Island after Bush had addressed the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“I assured them that this government, my government, believes in the universality of freedom,” said Bush, according to a statement released by the White House. “We believe there’s an Almighty, and a gift of that Almighty to every man, woman and child is freedom.”
