JERUSALEM (JTA) — The United Nations nuclear watchdog approved aid to help Syria build a nuclear power plant.
The board of the International Atomic Energy Agency approved the vote by consensus on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
The United States, Canada and Australia had called to freeze the project while the agency continues to investigate whether a northern Syrian building bombed by Israel last September was a nascent nuclear power plant.
A Nov. 19 IAEA report said that uranium particles had been found in the area.
Meanwhile, International Atomic Energy Agency head Mohamed ElBaradei said the agency’s investigation over the alleged Syrian nuclear plant is having difficulty going forward because it can not find any satellite images of the area, The Associated Press reported.
The Associated Press is reporting that agency officials are considering the idea that Syria or its allies may have purchased all the satellite images and the rights to them from commercial satellite companies.
