JERUSALEM (JTA) — Activists detained after trying to break the Gaza blockade on a ferry are set to be deported from Israel.
At least eight of the 21 activists from the Free Gaza organization have been in prison in Israel since June 30, when the Israeli Navy intercepted the ship carrying the activists and medical aid to Gaza. They were to be expelled Monday from Israel, according to reports.
The jailed activists include 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Ireland and former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney, a Georgia Democrat.
Israel said it would transfer the aid to Gaza through proper channels.
