JERUSALEM (JTA) — Some 12,000 indigent Israeli Holocaust survivors each will receive a $1,500 grant.
The grant will come from the Company for Restitution of Holocaust Victims Assets, which the Knesset established three years ago to return assets to Holocaust victims and help survivors using property for which no heirs have been located.
The money will be deposited directly into each survivor’s bank account beginning Monday, the second time such a deposit has been made in the last year, Ha’aretz reported.
According to the Israeli daily, some 80,000 Israelis defined as Holocaust survivors are living below the poverty line.
