JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Hamas-appointed Supreme Court chief justice in Gaza has ordered female lawyers to cover their hair in court.
The female lawyers also will be required to wear a long, dark-colored cloak under their robes, so that their clothing conforms to Islamic law, under which only their hands and faces can be seen, The Associated Press reported Sunday.
The requirements take effect Sept. 1. There are 150 registered female lawyers in Gaza, and most of them already cover their hair.
The measure is the latest in a series aimed at imposing an Islamic social agenda.
