Female Gaza attorneys can go without headscarves

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Female attorneys in Gaza are not required to wear a head covering in court, Gaza’s Hamas government said.

Gaza’s Supreme Justice Council on Sunday said the traditional Islamic dress was not required and rather was the personal preference of the council’s chairman. Female lawyers are requested, however, "only to appear in modest dress from now on," Ynet reported.

The previous decision requiring headscarves, which the council said Sunday was not an official governmental decree, was roundly criticized by rights groups when it was announced July 9.
