JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Palestinian Authority’s election commission recommended postponing January elections.
P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to accept Thursday’s recommendation by the Central Election Commission , which was announced at a news conference, Reuters reported.
The commission is independent, and is responsible for organizing Palestinian elections.
Holding elections before Abbas’ Fatah party and Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, have reconciled could lead to a permanent split between Palestinians, according to observers.
Abbas announced last week that he would not run for re-election, due to lack of progress in the peace process.
