Joint stamp salutes first Yiddish theater

ROME (JTA) — Romania and Israel have jointly issued a postage stamp honoring the world’s first Yiddish theater.

The stamp, which commemorates the establishment of Yiddish Theatre, founded by Avram Goldfaden in the northeast Romanian city of Iasi in 1876, was issued Nov. 26 evening at an event at Bucharest’s Jewish State Theatre.

Romanian President Traian Basescu took part in the ceremony. The Romanian news agency Agerpress quoted Basescu as calling the new stamp "a remarkable initiative" demonstrating that the cultural cooperation between the two countries had "a special significance in promoting the values of diversity, dialogue and the features of the Romanian and Israeli culture."
