The story of women’s roles within Orthodoxy has appeared on the front page of The Jewish Week five times in the last eight weeks, including four consecutive weeks (March 5, 12, 19, 26 and again April 23).
This has given the general public the false impression that women’s ordination is a highly debated subject in Orthodox circles. In reality, the vast majority of Orthodoxy, including mainstream and Modern Orthodoxy, do not consider this an issue worthy of debate as they know what Orthodox tradition says. It is only a small minority on the periphery of traditional Orthodoxy that is seriously debating this issue.
The title given to Sara Hurwitz and the story of it being conferred by Rabbi Avi Weiss has been repeated in each of the above articles and has received far too much publicity in this paper. The story may be of interest to many but needs to be kept in its proper prospective.
