JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli troops shot and killed a man attempting to infiltrate Israel from the Egyptian border.
The troops on Wednesday morning identified a group of armed men infiltrating from Egypt, about 40 miles north of Eilat, according to an Israeli military spokesman. The other infiltrators escaped into Egypt, but reportedly left behind an explosive device, the military said.
Haaretz later reported that the men had dropped a package containing drugs before fleeing.
The incident occurred at an area along the border where attempted infiltrations by drug smugglers or migrants seeking jobs occur frequently.
