JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli career soldier is suspected of passing sensitive military information to Hezbollah.

According to a statement released Wednesday by the Israel Defense Forces, the officer passed on military-security information to Lebanese drug dealers connected to the terrorist group as part of a drug smuggling ring.

The officer, whose identity is under a gag order, was arrested several weeks ago as part of a joint police and Investigating Military Police operation, and appeared Wednesday in a Haifa military court. Five Israeli civilians also were arrested in connection with the case.

The officer is accused of helping civilians smuggle drugs across the Israel-Lebanon border and of passing information on border troop strength, as well as areas where the border could be crossed without detection, including areas where tracking equipment was inactive, according to reports.

Reportedly he was paid thousands of dollars for the information.

The officer could be charged with serious offenses, including treason and contact with a foreign agent, Ynet reported.
