SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — One of the vandals who attacked a northern California synagogue left behind yellow paint footprints, police told a local television station.
The vandals apparently spray-painted graffiti on the sidewalk and back fence at Congregation Beth Shalom in Carmichael, near Sacramento, and then one of them stepped in the wet paint before entering the synagogue, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department told KCRA.
The vandalism was reported Monday afternoon.
Beth Shalom has been targeted before, most recently in November 2009 when vandals painted swastikas and SS graffiti on building walls to commemorate Kristallnacht.
In 1999, Beth Shalom was one of three Sacramento-area synagogues hit by arson and was severely damaged. Two white supremacists were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for the crime.
