Montessori In New York Area

I read with great interest your recent article on the growth of the Jewish Montessori movement in the United States (Education Supplement, Aug. 20).

I was, however, surprised at the implication that Jewish Montessori is thriving primarily outside of the New York tri-state area, when in fact the movement is alive and well in Brooklyn, Monsey, Westchester and New Jersey. 

I am the head of school at Yeshivat Netivot Montessori in Edison, N.J., now entering its 10th year with an enrollment of over 100 students from infancy through fifth grade. The demand for this type of education is so strong that we have run out of space in our current building and have begun planning for an addition of several thousand square feet. In addition to children from the immediate area, including Highland Park, Edison and East Brunswick, three of our students commute from Woodmere, L.I. 

As your article did well to highlight, Montessori parents are moved by the extent to which their children maintain their natural curiosity and innate desire to learn. With our own eyes, we witness every day how well this method complements the Torah values of our own tradition and meets the needs of each child, giving them a lifelong love of learning.
