We were delighted to see the recognition given to the American Hebrew Academy, one of the many gems in our Jewish community (“For Jewish Boarding School, It’s Old Wine In New Bottle,” Aug. 20). However, we were equally dismayed by author Steven Bayme’s reference to “the relative weakness of Greensboro as a Jewish community.”
Obviously, Bayme did limited research regarding the Greensboro Jewish presence, both nationally and locally. The current national chair of the board of trustees of the Jewish Federations of North America, Kathy Manning, and the national chair of the board of governors of International Hillel, Randall Kaplan, both live in Greensboro. Many other members of our community also serve on the national boards of major Jewish organizations. Each gained experience as Jewish leaders by serving on boards and committees in Greensboro Jewish communal institutions.
Further, Greensboro boasts one of the highest per capita federation campaigns and foundation endowment funds in North America. We are proud to have one of the highest congregational affiliation rates of any Jewish community. Our synagogues are strong, vibrant houses of worship and learning, and a child can attend vibrant Jewish day school from preschool through high school.
The presence of the American Hebrew Academy is a source of great pride, and many families of AHA students choose to relocate once they experience all that the Greensboro Jewish community has to offer.
