Playing For The Kiddush Cup

Concerning the JTA article you carried in the Oct. 15 issue, “No Hail Marys Here,” as a starting outside linebacker for a Jewish football team not located in San Diego, I know that there is more then just one Jewish football team in the United States. In South Florida, there are two Jewish football teams: The Posnack Rams and the Hillel Hurricanes.
I am a senior at the Ben Lipson Hillel Community High School, a traditional Jewish school in North Miami Beach, Fla.
The Hillel Hurricanes tackle football team is a third-year program. For the past two years, we have had a winning season. We were 5-2 in 2009, and we are currently 5-1, with one game to go in our regular season.
We play in an independent league against some independent teams and division teams. Our team sings the Hatikvah at home games and does not play on Friday nights or Saturdays. Before every game, the rabbinic dean of our school, Rabbi Chaim Albert, gives us a dvar Torah to pump us up.
Furthermore, we play the Posnack Rams once a year, an event dubbed The Jew Bowl in South Florida, with the winner receiving The Kiddush Cup, a trophy that has resided within Hillel halls for the past three years. Perhaps a real milestone in Jewish history would be for the best Jewish football team on the East Coast to play the best Jewish team of the West Coast.
