JERUSALEM (JTA) — Fifteen members of a Palestinian family were evicted from a home in eastern Jerusalem that was sold to a company allegedly representing a Jewish group working to increase the Jewish presence in the area.
The home’s Palestinian owner sold the property for approximately $450,000 in 2004, but the other family members had fought the sale, including in court. The owner died three months ago in the middle of the legal battle, the French news agency AFP reported.
The Kara’in family told AFP that the Lowell Investments company that purchased the property was representing the right-wing Elad organization, which assists Jews in settling in eastern Jerusalem. Elad rejected the assertion.
About 100 police officers surrounded the property in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber early Tuesday morning.
