JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel will set up a permanent trauma and emergency center in Haiti.
The center, a pilot project, will be established in Haiti’s second largest city, Cap-Haitien, with more than 1 million residents, in the aftermath of January’s devastating earthquake in the country. Ynet reported that the area currently has no infrastructure for trauma victims.
Meanwhile, IsraAID-the Israel Aid Agency ‘s medical clinic in Leogane has been declared a cholera treatment facility by the United Nations.
The clinic, which is fully funded by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, has treated hundreds of families in the Leogane area since early September, according to Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
Leogane, a coastal city 18 miles west of the Haitian capital of Port-Au-Prince, was at the epicenter of the earthquake. Some 20,000 to 30,000 people in the area were killed there.
More than 1,250 Haitians infected with cholera have died since October. Israel has sent 200,000 doses of cholera medication to Haiti.
In the immediate aftermath of the quake, which has left more than 100,000 dead and hundreds of thousands injured, IsraAID sent a field hospital and medical personnel to Haiti. Israeli police also joined the United Nations Stabilization Mission there to help keep order.
