JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel’s military said it killed two Palestinians on the border with Gaza who were attempting to carry out a terror attack on Israel.

The two members of the al-Quds Brigades, Islamic Jihad’s military wing, were hit by gunfire from Israeli ground troops and then by shells shot from Israeli Air Force helicopters near the security fence, the Israel Defense Forces said. Israeli troops found light weapons, uniforms and an explosive device on their bodies.

They were either planning to lay explosives at the border to attack Israeli troops on patrol or to infiltrate the border and set up an attack in a nearby Jewish community, according to reports.

Since the beginning of 2010, approximately 100 terror-related incidents have taken place near the security fence surrounding the Gaza Strip, an average of one incident every three days, according to the IDF.
