WASHINGTON (JTA) — U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden is preparing for prostate cancer surgery.

In a statement Wyden (D-Ore.), who is Jewish, said he decided to take a "proactive approach" after being diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer.

His scheduled surgery is to take place Monday at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Protracted debate in the Senate means he will miss some votes, Wyden said, but "I expect to be back to work full-time when the Senate reconvenes in January."

Both the National Jewish Democratic Council and the Republican Jewish Coalition wished Wyden a full recovery.

Wyden, 61, was elected to the Senate in 1996.
