(JTA) — Vandals smashed several headstones in a Jewish cemetery in Istanbul.
The damage to the eight headstones and the periphery was discovered on Tuesday, the last day of Passover, in the of the Jewish cemetery in the Beyoglu section of the Turkish city.
Police said they would view security tapes from around the cemetery in an attempt to identify the vandals.
About 20,000 Jews live in Turkey, with about 18,000 in Istanbul, according to the Jewish Virtual Library. Istanbul has 16 synagogues.
