JERUSALEM (JTA) — Iran has sent submarines to the Red Sea on what it says is an information-gathering mission.
The move was reported Tuesday by the semi-official Iranian Fars news agency.
"Iranian military submarines entered the Red Sea waters with the goal of collecting information and identifying other countries’ combat vessels," Fars reported, according to news reports.
The subs reportedly are accompanying an Iranian naval fleet.
In February, two Iranian warships entered the Suez Canal, the first to pass through since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. The move concerned Israel, which put its naval fleet on high alert.
