Gary Rosenblatt bemoans the swift and strong criticism against The Jewish Week for “Orthodoxy bashing” arising out of Hella Winston’s stinging criticism of Shomrim and the role it played in the search for Leiby Kletzky (“Is It ‘Anti-Orthodox’ To Seek A Safer Community?” Aug. 5).
“For everything there is a time and a season under the Heavens” Solomon prudently noted in Ecclesiastes 3:1. It may be true that criticism and debate of Shomrim’s policies is warranted. But The Jewish Week’s extremely poor choice to feature that story angle in the context of the Leiby Kletzky murder, the very week following the horrible tragedy, by a reporter who has never had a good word to say about the Orthodox in these pages, and at a time when the other national and local news outlets, both TV and print, were all focusing on the family’s pain, the grieving entire New York community and the positive tremendous good will of the surrounding Jewish community, left this reader — and apparently many of your other readers as well — with the inescapable conclusion that The Jewish Week never fails to pass on an opportunity to pick a bone with the Orthodox community, no matter how crass and untimely.
