JERUSALEM (JTA) — Thousands of Israelis gathered at the site of Yitzhak Rabin’s murder to mark the 16th anniversary of his death.
The annual memorial at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, postponed a week because of bad weather, drew about 10,000 people on Saturday night. The event was smaller than in previous years.
Speakers criticized the extreme right-wing "price tag" attacks, which have increased in frequency in recent weeks. No Rabin family members spoke at the event.
Left-wing leader Yossi Sarid told the crowd that Rabin is "waiting for an heir." He said Rabin’s real killers — the political leaders who led the incitement against the prime minister — are still walking free.
The event was organized for the first time by a group calling itself November 5, 1995, instead of by the Yitzhak Rabin Center.
Rabin’s killer, Yigal Amir, is serving a life term in prison.
