The ADL has issued a statement decrying a billboard for Wodka Vodka. “Christmas Quality, Hanukkah Pricing” was the ad’s tagline, which the ADL said was “crude and offensive” and “reinforces anti-Semitic stereotypes.”
While I get this is supposed to be a twist on the “Jews are cheap” trope, I don’t really think it works here. I was always under the impression that Hanukkah, with its “eight crazy nights” of gifts, was actually the more expensive of the two winter holidays. Hanukkah isn’t the cheap mistress in this scenario. Christmas is. Perhaps flipping the tagline would work better. It would certainly get the ADL off Wodka’s back.
This billboard is part of a larger advertising campaign by Wodka comparing things that are expensive and cheap. Other ads read, “Escort Quality, Hooker Pricing” and “Hamptons Quality, Newark Pricing.”
Corey Booker, why haven’t you stepped up to defend your city from associations with cheap vodka?
