JERUSALEM (JTA) — An ax-wielding Palestinian man was shot in the foot by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Jerusalem.
The man, 29, reportedly pulled an ax from a bag Sunday as he approached the Kalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem. After calling out several warnings for the man to stop, Israeli soldiers first fired warning shots in the air and then fired at his legs.
The bag reportedly contained maps, papers with nationalist slogans and a knife. Police told Israeli media that it is believed he was set to carry out a terrorist attack.
The Palestinian was treated at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.
The incident occurred a day after a Palestinian man stabbed a Border Guard officer in the neck with a screwdriver near the Shufat refugee camp north of Jerusalem. The stabber has not been found.
