Peres home after hernia surgery

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli President Shimon Peres is back home after hernia surgery.

Peres, 88, left the the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer on Sunday after undergoing the surgery two days earlier. Doctors said the surgery was successful.

The hernia was discovered in Peres’ abdomen during his state visit last week to Canada. He did not cut his trip short due to the hernia.

Peres thanked the hospital staff for "their professional and dedicated care."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Peres in the hospital on Saturday night.

Peres had been scheduled to present the prestigious Wolf Prize on Sunday evening but likely will have to remain at home for the awards ceremony.
