Gary Rosenblatt’s column, “On Haredi Service, Half A Great Idea” (July 20), echoed my sentiments exactly.
Furthermore, the haredi community, with its great disdain for the State of Israel, has no right to drain the state of its resources — let their own support each other, in my opinion.
The state should really make social welfare contingent upon service — no service, no welfare. That would fix at least one problem, and put resources back to the state so people like Moshe Silman [who died after immolating himself in protest against alleged social inequities] as well as young people and others who served Israel faithfully, shouldn’t be denied housing when they need it.
There is no place in the Torah that says people should study Torah day and night, refusing to make a living to support their own families.
