As a great admirer and collector of Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt’s recordings, I leaped with great pleasure when I read the first paragraph of Gary Rosenblatt’s column, “Rosenblatt, Yes. But Not That Rosenblatt,” Sept. 14.
However, Cantor Rosenblatt did not appear in the film, “The Jazz Singer,” as Rosenblatt wrote. Although he was offered $100,000 for a role in the film he turned it down because he believed it would be sacrilege as a cantor to appear in and sing Kol Nidre in a secular film. It was, indeed, Al Jolson who sang the Kol Nidre in the film.
Cantor Rosenblatt was truly a man of honor and principle.
Now I shall listen to my Yossele Rosenblatt recordings, which always calm and soothe me.
