White House: Europeans are able to think for themselves.

Y-Net today quoted Israeli "sources" with "close ties to U.S. administration officials" as saying that the White House encouraged European nations to carpet Israel’s envoys for its recent announcement of building in eastern Jerusalem and the West Bank.

"The European move is essentially an American move," one official said. "The Brits asked the Americans how to act."

No way, says Tommy Vietor, the spokesman for the National Security Council. He tells me:

No, this is wrong. These countries make their own decisions.

I also spoke to Aharon Sagui, the embassy spokesman. He has no idea whom Y-Net is referring to, both in terms of the Israeli "sources" or American "officials."
