JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel paid compensation to the families of two Palestinian workers killed in 2005 by Hamas rockets fired on a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip.
The families each received $296,000 last week from the Israeli government, Israel’s Channel 10 reported Sunday.
On June 8, 2005, the men were working at a greenhouse in Ganei Tal when the attack took place. A Chinese worker also was killed.
It is believed to be the first time that Palestinian workers in Jewish settlements received terror victim death benefits, according to the Times of Israel.
The families’ claims for compensation at first were denied by a labor court, but were approved on appeal to a Ministry of Defense committee.
Several weeks after the attack, the Ganei Tal settlement was demolished as part of the Gaza evacuation. The greenhouses, which Israel left standing, were destroyed by the Palestinians after the pullout.
